Led by an Emmy Award-winning cast (James Spader, Denny Crane and Candice Bergen), “Boston Legal” tells the professional and personal stories of a group of brilliant but often emotionally challenged lawyers. The fast-paced and darkly comic series confronts social and moral issues as its characters constantly push the boundaries of the law. Cases still vary from minors to adults. Story arcs include the murder of a judge`s wife (with Ashton Holmes as the suspect and Katey Sagal as the mother) and an outrageous beep (David Dean Bottrell) with a Jones for Shirley (Candice Bergen). Meanwhile, Denny Crane (William Shatner) finds love for little lawyer Bethany (Meredith Eaton Guild) – and her mother Bella (Delta Burke). And Alan (James Spader, who received a second Emmy to add the Emmy he received for The Practice) helps former colleague Jerry “Hands” Espenson (Christian Clemenson) get out of a few jams. At the end of the season, Jeffrey is gone, while Jerry returns to Crane, Poole & Schmidt. Denise finds herself in a difficult situation when a car accident case that she neglected for three years is on trial and she is not prepared. while Garrett is doing some research, he meets Cassie (Tamara Feldman), a young paralegal whose strange sexual tendencies hide a painful past; Denny learns that he must apologize to Lori or face a complaint of sexual harassment.
Alan takes Sara to dinner and do a “show”. In Year 3, Boston Legal continues to switch between comedy and pathos with ease. The season begins with a bittersweet note when Denise (Julie Bowen) gets engaged to Daniel (Michael J. Fox), terminally ill, who disappears to attempt an experimental treatment. That`s where two new litigators come in, Claire Sims (Constance Zimmer), an intelligent employee, and Jeffrey Coho (Craig Bierko), an arrogant partner. After Daniel leaves the picture, Jeffrey and Brad (Mark Valley) fight over Denise`s affection. The firm soon welcomes a third new face: Legal Secretary Clarence (Gary Anthony Williams) – also known as Clarice, Clavant and Oprah. Throughout the year, the firm deals with a variety of current issues, ranging from religious freedom to immigration law. Journalist Gracie Jane (Jill Brennan), a doppelganger from Nancy Grace, also comes for some ribs.
In addition to recurring characters like Jane Lynch (as a sexual surrogate), the third season stars actors behind the camera, such as Eric Stoltz (“Dumping Bella”) and Adam Arkin (“Nuts”) from David E. Kelley`s Chicago Hope. The Featurette Character Witness looks at the most dazzling characters of the year – it turns out spader and Clemenson are old friends – and Out of Order looks at the judges, especially Gail O`Grady, Howard Hesseman and Shelley Berman. –Kathleen C.
