In addition to pro-union disputes, the ULA engages in legal and conventional activism to advance center-left social issues. Advocacy for same-sex and transgender people is one of the main themes of the alliance. [7] The ULA also joined the AFL-CIO in support of the Black Lives Matter movement. [8] LCC`s Minority Awareness Program encourages law students of colour to apply for summer internships at LCC law firms and legal services. The outreach programme aims to introduce minority law students to legal practice in the trade union movement and encourage them to join the ranks of trade union lawyers in the ongoing struggle for social and economic justice. Between 2011 and 2015, the Union Lawyers Association generated between $850,000 and $900,000 in annual revenue. In 2015, Allianz`s annual revenue reached just over $1 million. ULA derives most of its revenue from the legal services it provides to the AFL-CIO and its subsidiaries. [14] The AFL-CIO is a voluntary association of 57 national and international unions. The AFL-CIO labor movement represents 12 million members, including three million members in Working America, its community affiliate. The mission of the AFL-CIO is to improve the lives of working families and bring workplace economic justice and social justice to our country. The AFL-CIO Lawyers` Coordination Committee (LCC), which was established to support the legal representation of unions associated with the AFL-CIO, is made up of more than 2,000 lawyers from union legal departments and law firms across the country.

The AFL-CIO and LCC sponsor the following programs to help law students and law graduates interested in working in the labor movement: The AFL-CIO, ULA has created and collected a series of documents from union lawyers on the legal implications of the COVID-19 economic and health crisis. Most trade unions have in-house legal advisers at local and national levels, but independent trade union law firms complement the work of in-house trade union legal advisers. Many of these union lawyers are associated with the ULA. [5] To be eligible for alliance membership, a lawyer must devote more than 50% of their time to the practice of union labour law and the representation of AFL-CIO affiliates. ULA lawyers will have access to a directory of all other Alliance lawyers and a library of legal resources, as well as placement assistance and other forms of support. The ULA organizes an annual conference during which it presents developments in labour law and trains its members. [6] The AFL-CIO Legal Department is looking for articling students to help resolve various legal and policy issues throughout the year. The articling student`s duties include legal research and writing in a variety of areas, including the National Labour Relations Act and a variety of legislative, regulatory and policy issues.

Applicants must have a direct interest in matters affecting working families. 2Ls preferred. To apply, send a cover letter, resume, transcript, and writing sample to Matt Ginsburg, mginsburg@aflcio.org. ULA runs a DOOR (Diversity, Outreach, Opportunities, and Recruiting) program specifically for ethnic minority law students. Like the Law School Outreach Project, this program is designed to introduce students to labor law and join the ranks of labor rights union activists to advocate for pro-union legal activism. The DOOR programme organises its own annual conference. [10] ULA offers law school graduates a one-year scholarship with the AFL-CIO Legal Department, which advocates for pro-union litigation and supports afl-CIO advocacy efforts. Fellows support AFL-CIO lawyers, attend meetings and hearings, and participate in ULA activities, including lectures and outreach activities for law students. [11] The ULA claims to have more than 2,100 members from more than 500 law firms and union legal services across the country. [12] The AFL-CIO Union Lawyers Alliance (ULA) is a professional association of labor lawyers affiliated with the American Federation of Labor – Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), the largest labor federation in the United States.

In November 2020, the organization changed its name from the Lawyers Coordinating Committee to the Union Lawyers Alliance. [1] The ULA is housed in the legal department of the AFL-CIO. [2] The National Labour Relations Board`s specialization program offers lawyers with a senior background who have just completed a law degree, a master of laws program or a judicial internship the opportunity to work directly with board members appointed by the chair of the National Labour Relations Board (NLRB). Duties include rotations of work in one or more members of the Board of Directors, the Office of Representation Appeals, the Office of the Advocate and/or the Office of the Executive Secretary. And now a late development has put him in awe. Enrique Espinoza is the third Chicago-Kent student or graduate to receive the prestigious scholarship “We are selecting an fellow who will grow as a lawyer in our firm during the year and who has shown a commitment to using his talents to help workers and the labor movement,” says Craig Becker. Advocate General of the AFL-CIO.

“Enrique`s extraordinary personal history, track record in Chicago Kent and work ethic have made him a perfect addition. Since the President of the AFL-CIO, we look forward to working with him. The AFL-CIO has historically allied itself with the Democratic Party, but has moved away from center-left social concerns to focus on labor issues beginning in the 1970s. According to the center-right Heritage Foundation, this changed in the 1990s, when the federation`s base shifted from production workers to public sector employees and employees. Richard Trumka, then secretary and treasurer of the AFL-CIO, attacked more moderate Democrats in particular, calling their efforts to move their party to the center a “plan for a political disaster.” [3] Trumka is now President of the Federation. He advised future labour lawyers to “be at the forefront of this activism” when they spoke at the 2018 Minority Awareness Conference organized by the ULA (then the Lawyers` Coordinating Committee). [4] Espinoza has been in the hospitality industry since arriving in the United States in 2007. What he experienced during those years — labour disputes, he says, where employees were often too afraid to speak out — led him to explore the law. The LCC Hiring Hall is a monthly list of employment positions published by our members. Click here to see the current settings hall. And in 2021, Espinoza was named a Peggy Browning Fund Fellow to work in the Chicago offices of the National Legal Advocacy Network (NLAN), a nonprofit advocate for low-wage workers` rights who help clients who say they are affected by things like age or gender discrimination or unfair overtime or compensation practices.

When Enrique Espinoza (LAW `22) first enrolled at chicago-Kent College of Law years ago, he was just hoping to find a job that would help immigrants like him. After working in the hospitality industry for decades to support his large family, he knew it was a risk. Craig Becker is General Counsel of the AFL-CIO. Prior to this role, Craig was a member of the National Labor Relations Board after being appointed by President Obama in March 2010 and serving until January 2012. “I am an immigrant. I felt that writing was never my strength, I didn`t think I could do it. But the mentors I had in Chicago-Kent helped me a lot,” he adds. “If you work in the field of labor law, working with the AFL-CIO in Washington is equivalent to a position as an official on the Supreme Court. It`s the front of the field. Craig graduated from Yale College in 1978 and received his J.D. from Yale Law School in 1981, where he was editor of the Yale Law Journal. The AFL-CIO is a voluntary association of 55 national and international unions representing more than 12 million workers, women and men in the United States.

The Law Fellow program is open to law graduates, clerks, and third-year law students. “It`s personal; it means a lot to me and my family,” says Espinoza. “I was hoping to finish my studies and find a job in an area that would provide better working conditions for workers. But at this level? No, I never imagined having that. In January 2012, President Barack Obama appointed Richard Griffin, a former board member of the Lawyers` Coordinating Committee, to the National Labor Relations Board. [13] Only a one-year scholarship is offered by the organization each year, and this is the third time in four years that it has been awarded to a Chicago-Kent student or graduate, the AFL-CIO confirmed.
