Japanese online retailer Rakuten Inc. announced Friday that it is banning the sale of ivory on its website, closing an important sales channel in one of the world`s largest legal ivory markets. I bought two bottles of Lancôme Genifique serum from Rakuten`s website and paid over PayPal to Rakuten.deWhen opening a bottle, it smelled like laundry and the serum was not smooth as usual. Upon closer inspection, it became apparent that the letters on the bottle were not as sharp as usual and that the black on the bottle was less intense. In addition, the bottle cap was higher than normal. Conclusion: a fake product! When I contacted Rakuten, they told me I had to deal with their supplier and return the product for a refund. Since I bought from Rakuten and no one else, I told them I wanted Rakuten to be careful as a legal seller. The people I had on the phone got very rude to me and then I contacted PayPal.PayPal advised me to return the product to Rakuten (legally the seller) and I did. To my surprise, I picked up the package: it had been rejected. I sent my results to PayPal who told me they would refund the full amount I had paid. Another annoying problem to me is that you can`t see if a seller is delivering via DHL or Hermes. So you can`t know if you can use your “DHL Pick up Stations” address or not. Just try and make mistakes. My original intention was to use Amazon as little as possible. But Rakuten is not a good alternative.
